Drug Rehab

Drug addiction can be a devastating condition that can destroy families and ruin lives. Drug addiction can be defined as compulsive drug craving and used despite the negative effects that the drug causes. There are two components that make up drug addiction, psychological dependency and physical dependency. Psychological dependency means that the addict requires the drug in order to relieve pain, cause pleasure, or to relieve stress. Physical dependency means that the body has grown used to the drug in it's system and requires the drug to feel normal and the removal of the drug will cause the onset of withdrawal.

There are many different substances that someone can be addicted to. The most common drugs that can cause addiction are caffeine, nicotine from tobacco and alcohol. While these substances can be life threatening and hard to break, they are not as addictive as the harder drugs such as amphetamine andheroin addiction.

As addiction scientists learn more about what causes addiction and how the drugs operate, more can be done to treat the drug addicts. One of the hardest parts of drug treatment is the withdrawal that the patient goes through. Withdrawal symptoms can include intense pain, cravings, cold sweats and even hallucinations. Sudden withdrawal from alcohol and barbiturate addiction can actually be fatal due to a neuro-chemical imbalance.

A fairly new treatment when it comes to opiate addiction treatment is the use of suboxone, also known as buprenorphine. Suboxone treatment uses a strong opiate to help reduce the withdrawal symptoms of an opiate addict. While the use of suboxone has been criticized as trading one addiction for another, the fact is that suboxone can be carefully controlled and monitored as opposed to illicit opiate use which can leave to overdoses or disease spread through drug use. Treatment with the use of suboxone slowly lowers the amount of opiates given to the patient over time, slowly reducing it to zero.

Drug addiction treatment can be a long and painful path, but once clean you'll find yourself much more healthy than you ever were under the influence of a drug.
